HOW TO BUILD A STRONG PET BRAND

Succeeding in the pet industry is no easy feat, no matter what sector you decide to operate in, you will have strong competition, and lots of it. With this in mind, it is advisable you begin with a strong brand, you need to stand out and you need to convey your brand values and message in one easy to understand visual. 

What is a (pet) brand?

Many people think a brand is just a logo, think of Nike or Apple as obvious examples, you can visualise their logos in micro seconds, but the logo is just the card on the top of the deck, there are 51 other cards and each one supports the other, a logo is not a brand, it is one small part of that brand with each card having its own special job to do in convincing potential customers why they should trust you and continue to trust you.

For example, your logo might be the first brand asset they see on a pet store shelf, and if they know about you, they will associate (hopefully) positive messages with that brand and consider you over the competition. The second card down we see the name card, it reads ‘Snuglix’, it imbues warmth and fun. A few cards down into our deck, we see the colour guidelines, and we see five pastel pantone colours that all seem to work together and create a feeling of warmth and trust. Going deeper into our deck of cards, we might look at the brand values card, it reads ‘Warm’, ‘Sincere’, ‘Friendly’ and ‘Adventurous’. These are the emotional brand assets as they aim to create deep connections with customers, fostering feelings like trust, joy, belonging, or identity, which drives loyalty beyond just a product's function or price. The very last card is titled ‘Purpose’ and this is the foundation card that supports every other card.

This was the first card you lay down, your mission statement is why you exist, the journey you plan to take your customers on and the card you read every day to stay on track and succeed in the pet industry.

Sounds easy? Any successful brand can be reverse engineered, as it’s all there to decipher, but starting with that first card and building upwards through the next 51 cards is the hard part. Try it, it’s not easy. With ‘advances’ in AI, anyone can become anything in nano-seconds, you can write books and blogs in seconds, attempt to develop your brand, but the results lack quality and depth and are easily spotted as fakes. Building truly long lasting brands takes time and commitment. There’s also emotion and tone to consider too, is it fun, serious, mysterious or strange. Developing a strong brand purpose and vision takes time and a lot of effort. Brand Tone

The brand tone is another key element of overall branding. The tone of your brand tells potential customers a lot about you. Are you serious? Full of jokes? Can you be trusted? Are you committed? The brand tone (like all other elements) permeates through every other element. The brand tone should work in harmony with the logo for example, if your brand tone is serious, but your logo looks playful and fun, there may be a friction point in your overall brand strategy and this could lead to confusion and ultimately lost custom and revenue. Pet Brand Colour Palette and Fonts

The colours you choose for your pet brand really set the tone. Colour psychology is key when it comes to designing a brand and the colours you choose really tie in with the brand tone mentioned above. Navy blue denotes trust, heritage and commitment. Orange denotes fun, lively and adventure. Forest green denotes sustainable, eco-conscious and caring. The colours we choose help us to convey the other brand elements we have developed and should not be rushed. We also help you look at a font family that will be used throughout all of your platforms, such as your website, packaging, internal and external printed and web based mediums and even social media. Fonts are important. Take comic sans, it’s a fun and unpredictable font that looks alive on the page, compare that with helvetica, it’s a universal font which stands for clarity, conformity and straight-edge. Choosing the right font will help your other brand elements shine.

This is the fun part! You have your pet brand name, purpose, vision, values and tone, now you need to create a logo that embodies all of them. This is a tough phase but one that needs to be considered the most as the logo is usually the first brand element that people see. GROUP 2 - TANGIBLE STUFF. PACKAGING AND PET PRODUCTS

This group encompasses two core stages, pet product design and product packaging. They can be selected together or as individual elements. And like all other elements, they are important to get right. 

Pet Product Design

At Bespoke Pet Products, we offer two types of pet product design services, one is private-label / white-label manufacturing and the other is bespoke made. Both options will yield the same high quality results we have become known for, but there are key differences. For our pet product design service, we only use bespoke manufacturing, as with private-label, all of the products are already designed, they just need to be manufactured with your branding. The differences of the two are a well listed throughout our website but just to quickly go over them here:

With our bespoke pet product design service, we like to keep it simple and keep you involved at every stage. We first ask you to send us ideas, this could be sketches, images of other products you have found, or just a written statement of what this product does and why you think it will succeed. We then get our design team to bring your ideas to life. We start with simple illustrations, run them past you and we keep building up a more robust picture of what you have envisioned. It may be that you already have a polished CAD file, or Photoshop / Illustrator or PDF. Whatever you have, we can work from that. We keep cycling through these rounds until we eventually deliver a manufacturing ready production design document. This CAD document will have every single measurement required for our production team to follow. Whether it is an injection mold for a new rubber dog toy, or a cut and sew pattern for a leash, collar and harness set, we get the document right so there are zero problems later on in the manufacturing stages, because problems in this stage cause delays, and delays cost money, and we avoid delays at all cost.

Pet Product Packaging Design

The packaging to house your pet products is important, very important. There are many types of packaging for pet products. From backing cards, wrap-around sleeves, swing tags, boxes and clear bags, you need to choose the right packaging that helps to convey all of the brand elements we have worked on so far, you don’t park a Ferrari in a £2 a day carpark and vice-versa. We can help you design and manufacture the best packaging for your pet brand. We have knowledge in deeper consumer psychology when it comes to purchasing choices and what makes consumers act. Business + Marketing Plans

Plans are important, we need to know where we are going before we begin. A well outlined business and marketing plan is your process and method rolled into one. You will waste a lot of time and money if you do not have a plan. Free rolling is cool, but you don’t want to do it too much in business, as you will easily sail off course. You need to know what you stand for, what you offer, who you want to offer it to, and how you will offer it and for how much you will charge. You also need to know about your internal and external threats and opportunities should they arise. You also need to have a place you want to be in five and ten years time. This is the importance of a plan, it is a written, factual statement of all of the above, and you will refer to it weekly or monthly to ask yourself “Are we on the right course?”

We like to keep things simple, and we are not about 15 page business plans that take months to develop, a simpler 2 page business plan will suffice. We will sit down with you (in person or virtually) and encourage you to explore all of the above stages (whether you developed them with us or without us) and we get it all down into a plan that will keep you and your team accountable and on track to succeed in the ever growing pet products industry.
